Dug out a lot of news related to SBS and a bit of Tibs.

1) Sv 177's introduction on 23 Apr 1989 (The very day MINDEF shifted from Tanglin to Gombak). MINDEF HQ > Upp Bt Timah Rd

2) MRT impact: SBS had initially expected 1/3 plunge in revenue w/ MRT commencement. It did not occur.

3) Bus Plans: The difficult days of reallocating buses away from S'goon Gardens. Or the feeder bus concept in 1980s.

4) The 1982 island bus plan which I guess the impact is still lingering today.

5) Sv 170's schedule reliability article in 1986. There was something abt 170 going OMO - over Malaysians not used to OMO.

6) Intro of Causeway toll (RM1.60 then) in 1984. By then SBS operates 140+ trips into JB daily.

7) The use of RM. Didn't know RM was so called accepted locally until formally stopped in 1982.

8) Volvo B10M MKII was highlighted in ST because it's the first purchase just before MRT commencement.

9) Merger of Sv 3 & 6.

10) Complains: Sv 154 made into the list

There was an letter back in 1989 of bus sv from Hougang to Jurong.

SBS's replies: No plans for new svs in lieu of shifting to Boon Lay Int the following year.

Sv 217's case super epic...

SBS explained needed to rationalise bus resources, S'goon Gardens ends up w/ lots of bus svs for a small town compared to HDB new towns.

Eventually S'goon Int dealt w/ everything.

Toa Payoh also - 'it was something overdue, if the bus interchange was up earlier'

174 & 199's complains started surfacing when NTI's complex were completed aft 1985.

Think I've mentioned somewhere before. This was not reflected in e press, SBS had plans to automate (magentic farecard) fare collection system as early as 1982.

Sv 170 went fully OMTS in 1994.

The reason was because they feared M'sian are not used to OMO

Bus services from Clementi towards the East doesn't use to turn to Avenue 3 (NTUC) and then Commonwealth Ave West. In the past, it turned right from the old interchange, to Clementi Ave 4/Ave West junction, and turned right again towards Commonwealth Ave West.

Svc 282/287 were integrated on 18 March 1988. Svc 99 was extended to Clementi according to the article.

The article also mentions about the following services that serves Clementi Int which were affected by the Avenue 3 route change: 74, 75, 92, 95, 96, 146, 186, 209, 285.

Back in 1982, there were no direct bus services between Bedok Int and Clementi Int.

According to this article, people complained about the lack of feeder service from West Coast Drive to Clementi. Hence, there were no Svc 285 as of 1983. Heard someone who mentioned that the 285 was introduced in 1981. Service 192 served West Coast also in the past.

This 1981 article said that SBS is soon introducing a service linking Jurong East and Clementi - most probably the former Svc 76. It also mentioned the proposal of services such as a semi-express service from Clementi to Shenton Way (97?) and Clementi to Toh Tuck Area/Jalan Anak Bukit - Which is Svc 205 and now, 173.

Somewhat I missed the Volvo B57

The formation of SBS was not govt sanctioned

It was govt runned aft e 3 bus company (the stakeholders) realised they couldn't run e entire bus co.

Tat's when MINDEF, SAF and other govt officials stepped in

SBS bought in farecard system on trial in 1985 but it was not feasible. 282 was the first route to accept farecard. A modified plan came out in 1986.

I remembered that the Volvo B57s were the last of the old buses that installed the farecard machine. However does other buses like the Mercedes Benz OF1413s, OF 1417s, Albion Vikings, Leyland Victories and 1st generation Leyland Atlanteans installed them as well?
